My Monster, My Map.
A KSer (meaning a Kill Stealer) , a term used by a victim on the opponent. Have anyone questioned; would the opponent be called a KSer if the player do not feel victimise?
When players regard the game as theirs, they became defensive and at the same time offensive. "My Monster, My Map" is the 4M. This is where the KS/KSer/KSing conflict begins.
"I suggest you don't touch my Monster"
"Can you change a channel? I was here first...”
Regardless how polite, the player crossed the line of owning rather than playing the game. The root of being overly self-conscious, words like "My or Mine" build tension. Although a KSer appears to be wronged, it was merely a convenient way of the player putting the fault on others.
The word "My/Mine" arise primarily due to desire and laziness (this is blown up but the purpose is to scope in and enlarge the micro).
A common example:
The general desire is to level-up but at the same time, do not want to share the map or monsters. The player is reluctant and indolent to move to another map, channel or world.
On the other hand, it is definitely not etiquette to steal monsters from another player (but it is also not wrong). The fact is, behide the screen of the opponent, it could be a kid or a Mother trying 1st time player on the keyboard.
To avoid such conflict, on the initial engagement, always assume the potential KSer did not do it on purpose. Avoid confrontation. These are some guide that can be helpful:
- Assume that the player (a potential KSer) hit the monster accidentally or unintentionally. Pause and hint the player with a F3 emotion if it continues. The hint usually works without a conversational confrontation.
- If point 1 doesn’t work, the opponent might not catch the hint. Ignore and move to another area of the map (share the M) if situation allow.
- The player might randomly cross the line picking the monster again. The monster belongs to the public, so play as per normal (some call it "KS back").
- If the opponent suggests the player to change a map instead, giving whatsoever reason (eg. "Your level is too low for these monster" etc.), make a consideration. Think twice before deciding to stay. To stay on, ignore replying. Mute is the best way to avoid confrontation.
- If the opponent is too strong, change a map / channel or world. If it's dealing against the King (Mushmon or Balrog), play as per norm.
- If the opponent follows the player everywhere (within the same map or even if channel have been change), this is when the potential KSer become a real KSing. This probably happen due to the cause and effect (meaning the opponent dislike something about the player). Anyway, the opponent could had a bad day at work. There are three options (choose one all use all):
- Keeping mute throughout, KS back with F2 pressed on random. F2 provoke and challenge the opponent mentally. Move around the map to waste each other time (it could take at least 10mins to hours). Having the first hit gain advantage. Nevertheless, avoid this if on single floor map, if the opponent can move faster (eg. equip with teleport, haste or better shoe) or if opponent prove the player is overly weak.
- Logout, change a char / world or take a break.
- The opponent is likely ignorant. Ask "Have you heard of the 4M theorem?". Refer him/her to this blog. This will educate the KSer how others feel. The KSer learn learn something new about playing MMORPG and respect other players in return.
It's easy to say "I've tried but it doesn't work". Practice makes perfect.
Wai's 4M theorem:
A KSer is not when victim is not. There is no such thing as My Monster My Map.
If someone complaint about being KSed again, refer him/her to this blog.

1stly, many thanks Wai, to you and all the mods for trying to make the forums a better place.
Some comments on your 'KSing' piece: I agree that we should treat everyone in the game with civility and not be too quick to rush and scold them/ scream at them. Personally, I can't stand people who immediately ask others to change map, usually with a "Change map PLS", thinking that just the 'pls' makes them polite and 'in the right'
However, I feel that the more important issue is that of players who set out to make the life of other players difficult. i.e. Those who KS on purpose. Or follow others around in order to chase them away. These actions frustrate players who log-on just for fun, and slowly, these 'for fun' players will want to log on less and less, leaving Maple overrun with selfish and inconsiderate players.
While I appreciate that the admin is doing much to rid Maple of Hackers/ Botters/ Scammers, perhaps more could also be done about the kind of players that are just out to bully 'weaker' players as well? Or is the law of the jungle all that exists in the gaming world?

I noticed I'm being quoted in your posting. I'll be the first to refute your theory because you do not seem to have alot of experience with bad players in game. I'm very sure you have played the game using some unknown character but maybe due to your busy schedule at your office, unlike some of us, you did not seem to have encountered much of such players who "KS" people. I'm not sure what is your definition of "KS" but here's mine and coincidentally many games define it this way too:
"A player should not kill or attempt to kill a monster that another player is in the process of killing. Repeatedly doing so will rob the victimised player of his/her right to obtain the full experience point of that particular monster due to the nature of exp sharing in maplestory"
To me, kill stealing is not "hey u are in my map, change channel". It is intolerable when a player of higher level robs you of your rights to obtain the full exp of the monster you have already started killing. Hopefully you can revise your theory of the 4M. This copy of the message is posted in the forums under general discussion and I really hope you'll entertain a respectful and friendly debate with me on this matter.

Welcome to my Blog Howard aka nokius ^ ^. I was telling hopez the other day that I was waiting for your arrival.. lol. Anyway, you start off the comment by saying that I quoted you in this post. *blur*, Have I???
Anyway, I love feedback and I thank you for the comments. I will sure entertain; my popular friend. Let's exchange some thoughs within this little blog of mine instead of going to the main channel.
Let's begin with these:
Qn 1 : Do you think it's right to request someone to change a channel? (My answer is no and I would like to know yours)
Qn 2 : Do you think it's right to use the word "my or mine" map / monster (4M) in the game? (My answer is no and I would like to know yours)
To respond on your statement on:
"A player should not kill or attempt to kill a monster that another player is in the process of killing."
>> 1. I prefer the word "should avoid" instead of "should not" kill. They still have the rights to kill since it neither belong to you nor me.
"Repeatedly doing so will rob the victimised player of his/her right to obtain the full experience point of that particular monster due to the nature of exp sharing in maplestory"
>> 2. I agree, repeating it "for quite sometime" will constitute to intentional KS. Please see my disclaim : "On the other hand, it is definitely not etiquette to steal monsters from another player (but it is also not wrong)."
"To me, kill stealing is not "hey u are in my map, change channel".
>> 3. I did not mentioned that a KSer is one who ask a player to change map. Please clarify ^ ^;;
"It is intolerable when a player of higher level robs you of your rights to obtain the full exp of the monster you have already started killing."
>> 4. Agree. Point 5 of my post stated a way to avoid such conflict. Unless, as quoted in my post "The player is reluctant and indolent to move to another map, channel or world."
Hope to hear from you soon ~

Hi wai, I guess I'm more of notorious in asiasoft and the community because my thoughts and behavior might be controversial ... here's my reply:
Qn 1 : Do you think it's right to request someone to change a channel?
> I have to agree that no one owns a channel but I admit I do but only if the other party's behavior matched those of an intentional kill stealer ...
Qn 2 : Do you think it's right to use the word "my or mine" map / monster (4M) in the game?
> It's not right, i also agree no one owns any map, channel but I think we temporarily own the monster we are in the process of killing (which shldn't take long anyway)
3) I did not mentioned that a KSer is one who ask a player to change map. Please clarify ^ ^;;
> I think this is some sort of a misunderstanding ... we all know a KSer isnt someone who ask a player to change map ... but the person who ask the player to change map view him/her as a KSer
I have some video evidence to present in the D&D section of the forum, i hope you can spare some of your precious time to take a look. :)
Another important point I wish to make is that ... since you mentioned that intentional KSing is just an etiquette wrongdoing, isn't scamming the same? But we ban scammers because they are doing something morally wrong too... on the other hand, you can even say that the victims are "stupid" to drop their items or get cheated ... but I see their asiasoft are very sympathetic towards victims of scam, so am i ... I hope that asiasoft can view KSing as an act of bullying/harassment and protect lower level players since Ksers are normally of a higher level .. maybe a ban straight away will be too harsh .. how about a warning first? then followed by a maybe 3 day ban? I have no rights to make the law and punishment so this is jsut a suggestion .. thanks alot for ur time, wai ..
Regards,
Howard
